Terry McLaurin’s lucrative contract details with Commanders revealed
By Jerry Trotta
The Washington Commanders‘ offseason officially became a resounding success on Tuesday after they inked Terry McLaurin to a three-year extension.
It’s a move that not only locks up the offense’s most important player, but signals to the rest of the NFL that Washington is starting to turn the corner as far as becoming a properly-run franchise that’s able to re-sign its best players.
Between Jonathan Allen’s extension last offseason and McLaurin putting pen to paper this time around, the Commanders are quietly becoming an attractive organization with Ron Rivera and Martin Mayhew presiding over personnel decisions and Jason Wright doing his best to control the off-field narrative.
But enough about the bigger picture. Today’s all about McLaurin, who’s now one of the highest-earning receivers in the entire NFL. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who broke the news, the 2019 third-round pick’s deal is worth $71 million. Now that the news is official, the contract’s other details have trickled out.
Terry McLaurin’s contract details with the Commanders revealed.
Per Schefter, McLaurin’s contract includes a $28 million signing bonus, which is guaranteed at the time of signing. That is now the largest signing bonus ever for a wide receiver, as it edges out DeAndre Hopkins ($27.5 million) and Tyreek Hill ($25.5 million). The next-closest is AJ Brown at $23.234 million.
Signed through the 2025 season, McLaurin will now pocket $23.33 million annually, which places him seventh amongst receivers behind Hill, DaVante Adams, Hopkins, Cooper Kupp, Brown and Stefon Diggs, respectively.
Here are some other key nuggets, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who initially reported negotiations between McLaurin and the Commanders picked up before minicamp. There was even hope an agreement would get done before camp. The fact it got hammered out a month before training camp, however, is a huge win.
Per Fowler, McLaurin will receive a whopping $47 million of his $52.3 million in guaranteed money by March of next year. Not only that, but his $23.3 million AAV (annual average value) can jump to $23.6 million based on incentives and the payout over the first three years is the fourth-most of any receiver in the NFL.
What McLaurin’s contract lacks in length and total value (most expected he’d sign a $100 million contract), it more than makes up for in guarantees and bonuses that make him one of the wealthiest WRs in the game through 2025. In other words, it’s a win for both the player and the Commanders, which is pretty impressive considering the bloated contracts other receivers have signed this offseason.
What a deserved pay day for McLaurin. If you need us, we’ll be celebrating the news until training camp starts … and probably longer.
