Daron Payne claps back hard at Robert Griffin III’s advice for Commanders
By Jerry Trotta
Former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III has been outspoken about his bullishness on his former team.
From stating his desire to rejoin the club, pegging them as a dark-horse Super Bowl contender and most recently lauding the dynamism of Washington’s offense, Griffin III is buying all the Commanders stock he can this offseason.
With Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel, RGIII believes Washington’s offense is as dynamic as it’s been in the last decade.
The underrated 2015 unit of Pierre Garcon, Alfred Morris, DeSean Jackson, Jordan Reed and Jamison Crowder might have something to say about that, but Griffin was definitely barking up the right tree with his analysis.
Later that same day, Griffin waxed poetic about the Commanders’ defensive line, going as far as to say their production will be more important than the play of Carson Wentz. With four former first-round picks making up the starting lineup, the group has no excuse not to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.
Daron Payne pushed back at Robert Griffin III’s advice for the Commanders’ defensive line.
Unfortunately for Griffin, his reference to Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen’s sideline scuffle in Week 16’s primetime clash vs the Cowboys caught Payne’s attention and the star defender clapped back at the former Offensive Rookie of the Year.

For anybody wondering, no, Payne wasn’t being sarcastic here. The former first-round selection out of Alabama took clear offense to RGIII’s referencing his sideline spat with Allen in primetime that culminated in Allen throwing a punch at Payne that thankfully didn’t land before the players were separated.
Could Griffin have made his point without highlighting one of the season’s low points? Sure, but he was just trying to get his point across. And Payne and Allen’s squabble did come during a stretch where the DL was getting punked in the trenches.
That didn’t mark the end of Payne’s replies to RGIII, however.
After former Alabama teammate Raekwon Davis replied with three laughing emojis, Payne doubled down on his RGIII criticism, reaching deep into his name-calling hat while throwing shade at Griffin’s standing as an analyst.
Payne’s tweets definitely produced some laughs amongst Commanders fans, but Griffin III’s analysis was pretty spot on. On paper, Washington’s defensive line has the potential to be the most fearsome in the NFL. Just ask Pro Football Focus, which ranked it as the second-best line in the game behind the Rams.
If Payne, Allen, Chase Young and Montez Sweat fulfill their potential and work as a cohesive group like Warren Sapp implored during minicamp, make no mistake; the Commanders will be in the playoff hunt next season.
We get why Payne took offense to RGIII’s tweet, but that was an embarrassing moment that won’t be forgotten until the DL lives up to expectations.
Griffin frequently replies to fans and trolls on Twitter, but he was nowhere to be found following Payne’s comments. That paints a pretty clear picture in terms of where he and Payne stand as far as friendship is concerned.
