4 recent Commanders departures who could win a Super Bowl in 2022
By Jerry Trotta
1. Tim Settle (Bills)
JD McKissic came close to joining Settle on the No. 1 spot. Thankfully, the Commanders swooped in after the versatile running back verbally agreed to a two-year deal with Buffalo during the legal tampering period.
Regardless, it wouldn’t be surprising if Settle is in the thick of the Super Bowl race next campaign. Had the Bills disposed of the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round overtime thriller, it’s not farfetched to think they would’ve beat the Bengals in the conference title game and played the Rams in the Super Bowl.
Bottom line? The Bills are knocking on the door of a championship and Settle figures to play a significant role on their defensive line. It’s tough to say if the 24-year-old will walk into a starting job, but he’ll undoubtedly get more playing time than he did in Washington as the top backup behind Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones.
It was never going to work out for Settle in Ashburn. Stuck behind Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis before his release, the 2018 fifth-round pick never played more than 33% of the snaps over his four seasons.
Ironically enough, the Commanders released Ioannidis after Settle had already been signed by Buffalo, forcing them into drafting Alabama DL Phidarian Mathis in the second round; earlier than most experts expected him to go.
Alas, there’s no sense crying over spilled milk and most Washington fans will be rooting for Settle to have success in Orchard Park. Imagine he wins a Super Bowl in his first season after leaving the team that drafted him?
