Commanders OC Scott Turner shows off strength with impressive deadlift
By Jerry Trotta
What the Washington Commanders‘ offense lacked in actual scoring output (their 19.7 points per game ranked 24th in the NFL) and red zone efficiency, it more than made up for in creativity and producing commanding drives.
That can be attributed to offensive coordinator Scott Turner. Like any play-caller, Turner annoyed fans at times with his conservative approach. His propensity to dial up runs on early downs and third and shorts were maddening.
With that said, Turner’s philosophy is incredibly promising and there’s reason to be believe we’ll get a clearer picture of his vision for the Commanders’ offense with Carson Wentz taking over the reins of the offense from Taylor Heinicke.
Due to Heinicke’s limitations as a quarterback (arm strength and manipulating defenses with his vision chief among them), Turner couldn’t fully express himself. In turn, Washington’s offense looked toothless for long stretches of games.
With a new vibe surrounding the offense, Turner is full of confidence following OTAs and mandatory minicamp. How confident is the 39-year-old play-caller? Well, let’s just say he deadlifted 475 pounds at team headquarters on Friday.
Commanders offensive coordinator Scott Turner deadlifted 475 pounds.
That’s one way to celebrate the conclusion of minicamp! It was definitely a struggle towards the end, but it was a clean rep from Turner nevertheless.
Despite the fact he’s approaching his 40th birthday in August, this clip suggests Turner could hold his own in the weight room with some of his offensive players. While the offensive line is likely in a class of its own, we’d like to see Turner take part in a lifting competition with the team’s other position groups.
We just hope the Commanders’ offensive guru keeps his back more straight next time he deadlifts. Removing some weight would definitely help matters, but cleaning 475 pounds is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, Turner made sure to let his Twitter followers know the exact weight after a fan was a little off in their guess.
Based on the clip, Turner could likely rep out 405 pounds with ease. He wasn’t about to let Twitter discredit his achievement.
The good news for Turner is he can improve his craft behind the scenes with Washington on summer break for the next month.
Fresh off signing a reported contract extension this offseason, Turner is finally positioned to showcase his play-calling prowess in 2022 after deploying eight different quarterbacks over his first two years on the job.
Who knows? Maybe we’ll be treated to more deadlifting videos along the way.
