6 free agents Commanders can sign after losing out on James Bradberry
By Jerry Trotta
2. Dont’a Hightower
Does this one really need much of an explanation? As presently constructed, linebacker is without question Washington’s biggest weakness on either side of the ball. Cole Holcomb is the only proven commodity on the unit, but even he shouldn’t be expected to carry the unit after one breakout season.
Our personal preference would be Alexander Johnson, who’s younger than Hightower and more reliable against the run, but we wouldn’t sneeze at the idea of adding a grizzled vet with three Super Bowl titles on his resume.
With that said, the Commanders better move fast. The longer Hightower sits around waiting to be signed, the more likely it is he returns to New England to serve as a mentor and rotational player for the Patriots’ new-look LB room.
With Cole Holcomb the favorite to assume the MIKE role, we can’t imagine anyone better than Hightower to guide him through that transition. Not to mention the impact the 32-year-old would have on Jamin Davis’ development…
1. Anthony Barr
If Holcomb really is the solution to the MIKE vacancy, then it wouldn’t hurt to build around the former fifth-round pick. While Davis is a phenomenal athlete and should be expected to make strides as a sophomore, the jury is still out on him and Washington could justify adding a veteran presence to the rotation.
Simply put, Barr is one of the best free agents remaining and is a rare linebacker who can rush the quarterback, defend the run and hold his own in coverage. Like with Hightower, the Commanders need to act swiftly with Barr, as ESPN NFL analyst Bill Barnwell predicts the four-time Pro Bowler to sign with the Cowboys.
The last thing Washington needs is a repeat of Bradberry and see another talented free agent land with a NFC East rival. Signing Barr would knock out two birds with one stone, as he has experience as an off-ball linebacker and would offer a needed pass-rushing presence next to Chase Young and Montez Sweat.
Injuries are a concern with the 30-year-old Barr. If the Commanders are encouraged by his medicals and willing to bet that he’ll stay healthy, though, they should give him a serious look. What do they have to lose?
