The Washington Commanders‘ will open the 2022 regular season at home against the Jaguars, giving Carson Wentz an immediate opportunity to avenge the loss that essentially ended his tenure in Indianapolis after one year.

Wentz will also lock horns with former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. If you remember, it was Pederson’s benching of Wentz in Week 12 of the 2020 season (coupled with the selection of Jalen Hurts in the second round months earlier) that marked the beginning of the end of Wentz’s Eagles career.

Another sneaky-compelling storyline? Brandon Scherff’s first game with Jacksonville will fittingly come against Washington in his former stomping grounds after he inked a three-year, $49.5 million deal with $30 million guaranteed in free agency.

In other words, this game has plenty of appeal. With that said, though, football fans won’t be running to their calendars to bookmark it, so let’s highlight some of the must-watch games on Washington’s 2022 schedule, shall we?

4. Week 8 at Colts

Carson Wentz’s return to Indianapolis. What more could you ask for? It’s honestly a shame this matchup wasn’t given a primetime slate, because it has game-of-the-season contender written all over it.

Not only will Wentz return to face his former team for the first time since he got traded, but Washington is built to beat the Colts, who love playing smash-mouth football with Jonathan Taylor and their punishing offensive line.

Last season, the Commanders ranked eighth in the NFL in rushing defense, while Indianapolis finished second in rushing offense. Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly vs Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. Chase Young vs Braden Smith on the right side of the edge. Kendall Fuller vs Michael Pittman in the secondary.

On the flip side, you have Terry McLaurin vs Stephon Gilmore and Darius Leonard trying to bait former teammate Carson Wentz into poor decisions. DeForest Buckner vs the interior of Washington’s OL is another battle to watch.

On top of the Wentz narrative, which makes this must-see by itself, there are captivating matchups everywhere you look. Two teams that like to win by controlling time of possession by running the rock and playing airtight defense.

Again, what more could you ask for?
