The 15 greatest draft picks in Washington Commanders history
By Jerry Trotta
13. Trent Williams (2010)
One of the better draft picks of the Dan Snyder era, Williams was arguably the league’s best left tackle during his entire run with the franchise. The former No. 4 overall pick left on bad terms, but signed off with seven straight Pro Bowls and his without question one of the best players to ever wear the Burgundy and Gold. He’d rank higher if the team won more during his tenure.
12. Chris Samuels (2000)
There’s an argument to be made that Williams deserves to be one spot ahead of Samuels, but it’s awfully close. We gave the nod to Samuels because he spent his entire nine-year career in Washington, made six Pro Bowls and was voted as one of the 80 Greatest Redskins of all-time. There’s still time for Williams to join the elusive club but that likely won’t happen until new ownership takes over.
11. Dexter Manley (1981)
The first of several Washington1980s draftees on this list, Manley won two championships in Washington and retired with the most sacks in team history. From 1983 through 1989 he was one of the most feared pass rushers in the league, tallying 84.5 sacks, including an All-Pro 1984 when he recorded 18.5.
10. Charles Mann (1983)
It’s absolutely dumbfounding to think Washington drafted Darrell Green AND Charles Mann in 1983. We’ll have more on Green in a minute, but Mann is the franchise’s third-leading sack leader with 82, was selected to three Pro Bowls and was a key cog on two title-winning Washington teams. He notched more than 10 sacks in four different seasons and holds the team record for most forced fumbles with 17.
