The Washington Commanders have established a reputation for drafting Alabama defensive linemen in the NFL Draft and they went back to their roots on Friday night by taking Crimson Tide product Phidarian Mathis at pick No. 47.

Mathis now joins Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne as Washington’s currently interior lineman to hail from Nick Saban’s rich program. Depending on what happens with Payne this offseason, that number could shrink to two before long.

The pick has received mixed reviews; not because anyone doubts Mathis’ talent, but because the Commanders only had to use a second-round pick on another DL after they cut ties with Tim Settle and Matt Ioannidis this offseason.

Whatever quibble fans have is with the front office, not Mathis, who’ll be an immediate contributor on Jack Del Rio’s defense.

The best part about the Mathis pick? It helped deliver one of the draft’s most wholesome moments. After Ron Rivera delivered the good news, the conversation paused. The reason? Mathis’ family was too loud celebrating.

Phidarian Mathis’ family was ecstatic after the Commanders drafted him in the second round Friday night.

This is what it’s all about, folks: young athletes realizing their lifelong dream. Unfortunately, Mathis’ family was so loud that we couldn’t grasp his excitement. Based on his initial reaction, though, he’s stoked to be a Commander.

Anyone else smiling from ear to ear after watching this? The undisputed best moments of the draft are the uninhibited emotions from players and their families after they get the call from their new team’s head coach or general manager.

Nothing compares to it. Just ask first-round pick Jahan Dotson. While the draft’s broadcast drowned out his family’s celebration, his watch party couldn’t contain their excitement after Roger Goodell announced the pick.

It’s not a competition, BUT Mathis’ family undoubtedly got the better of Dotson’s here. We’d honestly be hard-pressed to imagine anyone’s family that made this piercing of a celebration after they got the call.

As you could tell by Rivera’s reaction, he couldn’t get a word in and all he could do is smile. We’re just impressed coach was able to keep the phone by his ear the entire time.

Hopefully he’s not feeling the effects of the screams and he and Mathis were able to exchange a few more pleasantries before the call ended.
