The Washington Commanders selected a wide receiver in the first round of Thursday night’s NFL Draft.  A stunning trade between the Burgundy and Gold and New Orleans was only the beginning of a very wild first round.

The first ten picks of the 2022 NFL Draft were rather uneventful on Thursday night as each team made their selections in the time allotted.  Then suddenly, without warning, a trading frenzy ensued and a crazy offseason became even crazier.  An astonishing eight trades from picks 11 to 27 turned a routine opening night into a multiplicity of trades that continued to stun analysts and fans alike.

Washington began the trade parade at pick No. 11 and they were able to obtain the 16th pick, a third-rounder (98th) and a fourth-round selection (120th).  The front office started the evening with six picks and now they have eight overall.  Can the Commanders make another trade and add more draft capital?  What can we expect on days two and three from the Burgundy and Gold?

Welcome to our Day Two mock draft.  After taking a wide receiver in the first round, the Washington Commanders are now armed with seven draft picks on the final two days.  In this mock, you will see some familiar names, but there will be some new prospects as well.  Let’s see how the second and third days could unfold.

Washington Commanders Day 2 Mock Draft

Round One

***Official***

Jahan Dotson, Wide Receiver, Penn State – 5-11, 180

The Draft Network ranks Jahan Dotson as the fourth-best wide receiver in this class and the 23rd best player in the 2022 draft.  After a trade with the Saints, Washington chose to add him with the 16th overall selection.  His impact will be immediate and he is also a return specialist.

Round Two

Jalen Pitre, Defensive Back, Baylor – 5-11, 200

This is the player that Washington seeks in the second round.  A player who can fill the Buffalo nickel role with ease, play in the box, intimidate tight ends and running backs over the middle, blitz from the outside, and quickly drop back in coverage.  Jalen Pitre is all of that and more.

Round Three

Breece Hall, Running Back, Iowa State – 6-1, 220

This pick came down to Brian Robinson of Alabama and Breece Hall of Iowa State.  Robinson is rated a bit higher, but there is a chance that both players are gone by the time Washington is on the clock here late in the third round.  We’re taking a big swing here and if Hall is there at pick 98, the Commanders are sprinting to the podium.

Round Four

Darrian Beavers, Inside Linebacker, Cincinnati – 6-4, 255

The long search for a talented inside linebacker culminates with the addition of Darrian Beavers.  The 4.0 student played safety and wide receiver in his younger days and is now an impact player at inside linebacker.

Lecitus Smith, Offensive Guard, Virginia Tech – 6-3, 320

Head coach Ron Rivera said he wanted to add players that will sufficiently protect quarterback Carson Wentz.  They are able to find one of the answers early on day three of the draft.

Round Six

John Ridgeway, Defensive Tackle, Arkansas – 6-5, 325

Defensive tackles tend to be drafted somewhat lower and this could allow the Washington Commanders to add Ridgeway, a late fourth round/early fifth round talent.  There is a need for defensive tackle depth and he fits the description.

Round Seven

Jalen Wydermyer, Tight End, Texas A&M – 6-4, 255

Washington had a private workout and a top 30 visit with Jalen Wydermyer earlier this month and while he has slipped in the minds of many scouts and analysts, the Commanders seem to be very interested in this Aggie.

Chance Campbell, Inside Linebacker, Mississippi – 6-2, 235

Washington invited Campbell to the team’s local pro day and was able to meet with him for a period of time.  Campbell is a developmental linebacker and has some upside.  He could be a solid backup within a year or two.  Good special teams player.

There is your day two mock draft.  We’ll return once again early on Saturday morning for a day three mock.  See you then!
