A few weeks ago, this was not possible.  What changed?  In recent weeks, the Washington Commanders have visited with numerous running backs and have conducted team interviews at the facility in Ashburn.  All of it could be a smokescreen, but it could also be a real interest in adding help for Antonio Gibson.  Washington already has Jaret Patterson and Jonathan Williams on the roster.  It seems peculiar, but the interest in day two running backs seems real and Breece Hall would be a solid addition.

If a running back is chosen on day two of the draft, look for Patterson to find a place on the practice squad or another team altogether.  Williams had some solid outings down the stretch last season and has probably supplanted Patterson on the depth chart.  J.D. McKissic is more of a receiving back and he recently signed a new two year deal.  Adding Hall would help with any potential injuries – a problem that has plagued running backs wearing the Burgundy and Gold in recent seasons.  A three-headed monster of Gibson, Williams, and Hall would be a very formidable running back lineup.

It seems as if it is unfair for such a big back as Breece Hall to have such speed and power.  His measurables have been on display this winter and spring.  Hall has certainly caught the attention of coaches and front office personnel.  He recently spent some time with the staff in Ashburn on an official team visit and interest in the former Cyclones star seems genuine.

Over the last two seasons for Iowa State, Hall was simply one of the best running backs in all of college football.  He ran for more than 1,500 yards in 2020 and tacked on nearly the same amount the past season.  He is a bona fide receiving threat out of the backfield and provides excellent pass blocking protection for the quarterback.  Once Hall is able to get a step in the open field on a running play, it usually results in a touchdown.

While it may seem like a luxury pick in the third round, we must keep in mind that Washington currently lacks a third rounder and this mock produced one via the trade we put forth a round earlier.  Will that scenario actually unfold?  It has a higher degree of probability than what we see in the first round.  While yours truly would prefer to go in a different direction with this pick, mock drafts should always be in line with what the front office could be thinking and select players accordingly.  That is what we have provided for you with this pick.
