Remembering the 5 greatest moments of Dwayne Haskins’ football career
By Jerry Trotta
1. Getting Drafted/First Career NFL Win
We simply had to give Haskins’ most notable NFL milestones the top spot on this list. While his 2018 season at Ohio State was one for the ages and probably more memorable given the turbulent start to his pro career, making it to the NFL and getting your first win as a quarterback is every kid’s dream.
We’ll start with the 2019 Draft, where the now-Washington Commanders made Haskins the No. 15 overall selection. He was the third QB taken behind Kyler Murray, who went first overall to Arizona, and Daniel Jones, who went sixth to the Giants.
With Washington trading for Case Keenum before the draft in March, Haskins wasn’t expected to start as a rookie. However, a Keenum injury in late-October prompted interim head coach Bill Callahan to name Haskins the starter.
It’s well-documented that Haskins endured rookie growing pains, but Washington fans won’t soon forget his first career win vs the Lions in Week 12. The former Buckeye was far from spectacular in the game, but his reaction as the final seconds ticked off the clock showed how much the victory meant to him.
It didn’t work out for Haskins in Washington, but this wholesome moment with then-offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell was an encapsulation of all the work Haskins put in to reach this once-in-a-lifetime achievement and we’re heartbroken coming to the realization that there won’t be any more of these.
The Riggo’s Rag family continues to keep Haskins’ family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest easy, Dwayne.
