Tragedy struck both the NFL and Washington Commanders‘ family in unspeakable fashion on Saturday, as former quarterback Dwayne Haskins was killed when he was hit by a car in South Florida, his agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Haskins, 24, was in South Florida training with his Steelers teammates before the start of the team’s offseason workout program.
Former Commanders QB Dwayne Haskins died after he was struck by a car in South Florida on Saturday.
Haskins put together a fantastic junior season at Ohio State, his dream school, that ultimately helped him get drafted No. 15 overall by Washington in 2019. That year, Haskins set the single-season Buckeyes records for completion percentage (70%), passing yards (4,831), touchdown passes (50) and completions (373).
After getting drafted, Haskins made 13 starts in two seasons with Washington before he signed with the Steelers in 2021.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera released the following statement about Haskins’ tragic passing:
"I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of Dwayne Haskins Jr. Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time and I am honestly at a loss for words. I know I speak for the rest of our team in saying he will be sorely missed. Our team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family at this time."
We couldn’t have said it any better. Haskins had his entire life ahead of him. It’s impossible to put into words how tragic this news is. Like Rivera and Washington, the entire team at Riggo’s Rag sends our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family during this difficult time.
