4 draft pick re-dos that could’ve changed Commanders’ entire recent history
By Jerry Trotta
2. Fred Warner ove Derrius Guice (2018)
This re-do is actually somewhat timely, as Guice is currently eyeing a return to football after two years out of the league. A former second-round pick of Washington in 2018, Guice played in five games for the team before his career went off the rails due to various knee injuries and concerning off-field issues.
Guice’s injury woes included a torn ACL, torn meniscus and a MCL sprain, all of which he sustained within a two-year span. As far as his character concerns, there’s almost too many to list so we’ll give you the bullet points.
The former LSU star was suspended the first six games of 2021 stemming from a domestic violence arrest, which came as a result from three separate incidents.
Guice has also faced charges of strangulation and destruction of property, while two different women at LSU accused him of sexual assault and a third alleged he took a nude photo of her and showed the picture to his teammates.
Taken 11 picks after Guice was Fred Warner, who’s now recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound linebackers in the NFL. Since he entered the league, Warner’s 504 combined tackles rank fifth among all LBs. He’s started 64 of 65 games during that span while never logging lower than a 94% snap share.
In addition to being a tackle machine, Warner is immaculate in coverage and has contributed 22 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 25 passes defended, three interceptions 17 QB hits and a 73.7 player grade from PFF in his career.
Last offseason, the 49ers rewarded Warner with a five-year, $95 million contract that made him the then-highest paid linebacker. Had Washington played their cards right, they wouldn’t currently have a gaping hole at the LB position.
Alas, they’re still paying the price for drafting Guice.
