3 biggest Commanders whiffs of free agency thus far
By Jerry Trotta
1. Jordan Hicks
Jordan Hicks’ inclusion on this list comes with a caveat, as the Commanders have yet to add a new linebacker to the mix. With Jon Bostic a free agent and unlikely to return and Jamin Davis expected to be moved to an off-ball role, Washington still has a gaping hole at the inside LB position.
While Cole Holcomb has expressed confidence in his ability to fill the MIKE, he’s coming off a breakout third season in which he amassed career-highs in tackles, passes defended, interceptions and run stops.
Probably best to keep Holcomb him in his current role, which brings us to Hicks, who signed with the Vikings after a three-year run in Arizona. At face value, it looks as though Minnesota got a steal with Hicks’ contract, as he signed for a modest $10 million over two years, including just $5.95 million in guaranteed money.
You mean to tell us the Commanders couldn’t afford that?
Hicks topped 100 tackles every season with the Cardinals and 2021 might’ve been his most impressive season to date. In 17 appearances, he posted 116 tackles, five passes defended, four sacks, five QB hits and 37 run stops.
A $5 million salary for that production is a great piece of business. If only Washington sniffed around his market.
