3 biggest takeaways from Carson Wentz’s introductory press conference
By Jerry Trotta
1. Wentz has always wanted to throw to Terry McLaurin
An underlying theme in Washington over the last three seasons has been Terry McLaurin not being able to realize his full potential because of subpar QB play. Since being drafted in the third round out of Ohio State back in 2019, McLaurin has caught passes from eight different quarterbacks.
Wentz will be No. 9 and the hope is the former No. 2 overall pick will accentuate McLaurin’s skillset, which is superstar-level. It remains to be seen what kind of chemistry the new duo will have, but Wentz got fans even more excited in that regard with comments he made at Thursday’s presser.
As expected, the media asked Wentz if he had any previous relationships with his new teammates, including his receivers. He answered, no, obviously, but followed up by sharing his desire to reach out to them to start working out and throwing to build camaraderie.
Wentz mentioned McLaurin by name and recalled telling the then-rookie back in 2019 that “I’d love to throw the ball to you some day.”
"“I remember one of his (McLaurin) first games when I played against him, I told him after the game I’d love you throw the ball to you some day. Just because I think he took a slant, went 80 (yards) and I was like this kid’s different. Never did I think it would’ve ended up like this.”"
Are you serious?! Wentz talking in sheer awe about McLaurin’s talent is something the entire fan base can relate to. While 80-yard gains on slant routes are cool, we’re mostly excited to see McLaurin flourish catching passes from a quarterback who can actually get him the ball beyond the numbers.
Seems like Wentz is just as amped.
