The Washington Commanders were always expected to endure losses in free agency. The magnitude of those losses is yet to be determined, but the first domino fell nearly two hours into the legal tampering period.

While the likes of JD McKissic, Cam Sims, Bobby McCain and others are still braving the free agent waters, the Commanders’ undisputed biggest free agent, Brandon Scherff, has reportedly found his next home in the NFL.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Scherff intends to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Per reports, Scherff and the Jaguars are in agreement on a contract, though the official terms have yet to be disclosed.

Commanders free agent Brandon Scherff has signed with the Jaguars.

Scherff signing with another team isn’t exactly “news.” Coming off his second-straight season playing under the franchise tag, the five-time Pro Bowler was going to demand a baseline of $18 million with his next contract.

The Commanders’ taking on Carson Wentz’s full contract, which includes a $28 million cap hit for 2022, all but confirmed Scherff’s departure and he now heads to Jacksonville to block for Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft.

While the Jaguars were a laughingstock under Urban Meyer, there’s hope Doug Pederson, who famously coached the Eagles to a Super Bowl just a few years ago, will implement a new culture and pedigree in Duval County.

Adding a widely-respected veteran like Scherff is a good start in that regard and Commanders fans would be the first to attest to that.
