The Washington Commanders recently traded for quarterback, Carson Wentz, which shored up the team’s hole at the position–at least for the time being. It’s quite possible the front office takes a quarterback in the draft, but the move for Wentz virtually eliminates the possibility of signing another signal caller in free agency.

So where does the team look now? After having $33 million in cap space before the trade and now being only left with $5 million after the move, the team will have to find some “bang for your buck” players to fill some other team needs.

Of course, the Commanders will have an opportunity to restructure some contracts such as William Jackson III’s (cap hit $13.7m in 2022), and even Carson Wentz’s to free up some more cap room. But that can only go so far and the team will likely have to sign some cheaper options to head into the 2022 season with.

Here are three under the radar players Washington should target in free agency.

3 under-the-radar free agents for the Commanders

1. Darrell Williams

Washington got decent production from its running backs last year, especially from the pass catching extraordinaire JD McKissic. While it’s possible that McKissic returns, he may seek more money than the team is willing to give, and could move on to find a new home. Additionally, NFL Network’s Mike Garrafolo reported that there is a lot of interest for him around the league.

Williams got to shine last year in the explosive Kansas City offense after the Chiefs faced some injuries at running back, including starter, Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Williams caught 47 passes last year in a very crowded offense. He would almost definitely see an uptick in usage in the Commanders offense. McKissic had 43 catches in the 11 games he played last season and 80 catches the year prior.

Williams, though, can bring a little more speed to the table than McKissic does. Something that can add a much needed spark to the Washington offense.

Williams is also a viable pass protector and runner making him a strong 3rd-down running back candidate for the team. Pairing Williams with starter Antonio Gibson, could make for a nice dynamic duo for the Commanders.

Of course, the team would like to have the productive McKissic back, but Darrel Williams is a nice backup plan if he decides to leave the Chiefs.
