The Washington Commanders were going to get ridiculed for whomever they appointed as their new quarterback. That’s the reality of the situation when your franchise has started six different QBs over the last three seasons.

Though extremely unrealistic, the standard was (for some reason) set at Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson.

So when the Commanders struck a trade for Carson Wentz on Wednesday, they were lambasted and trolled from every which direction. Between Cowboys fans, Eagles fans and most of NFL Twitter, the slings and arrows were fired at will.

If you can believe it, some players even joined in on the fun.

The list most notably included Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, who seems overjoyed to have Wentz back in the NFC East.

Did Trevon Diggs troll the Commanders for trading for Carson Wentz?

We know a blushing emoji could mean anything, but the timing of Diggs’ tweet blows what cover he might’ve had. Throw in the fact that Diggs intercepted Wentz twice in one game as a rookie back in 2020, when Wentz was still with the Eagles, and it’s fairly easy to decrypt Diggs’ intention here.

They marked the first two interceptions of Diggs’ career, though the Cowboys wound up losing that game. The turnovers foreshadowed his All-Pro sophomore campaign in which he led the league with 11 INTs and two touchdowns.

That’s the thing about Diggs. While he’s arguably the best ball-hawking corner the NFL has to offer, he’s highly beatable in coverage. Cowboys fans sung Diggs’ praises for “shutting down” Terry McLaurin this past season, all the while ignoring McLaurin would’ve cooked him with better quarterback play.

While McLaurin was held in check against Dallas in 2021, teammate Cam Sims made sure to pick up the slack. In Week 14, Taylor Heinicke went full shot put mode and launched the ball as far as he could to Sims in the end zone.

Diggs actually had sticky coverage on the play, but Sims channeled his inner Randy Moss and committed an Alabama vs Alabama crime.

That’s a shame.

You’d think a cornerback with Diggs’ ball skills wouldn’t allow himself to get posterized like this, but what do we know? At the end of the day, though, this is about Diggs and Wentz, and, as much as this tweet infuriates us, the Cowboys cornerback did get the last laugh the last time he faced Wentz.

While the Eagles won that game (Ben DiNucci started for Dallas), picking Wentz off twice has Diggs drooling with anticipation for 2022.

For the Commanders sake, we hope Wentz took notice of this tweet and has something special in store for Dallas and Diggs … like letting McLaurin prove that this past season was a fluke with Heinicke throwing him the football.

We typically bookmark every Washington-Dallas game months in advance. After Diggs’ troll job, though, we might just hang the dates on our refrigerator.
