4 potential Commanders domino effects from Russell Wilson trade

3. What does this mean for Derek Carr’s future?
We said potential domino effects, not definite domino effects.
Nonetheless, it is worth speculating what this trade means for Derek Carr’s future. Despite endorsing the Josh McDaniels hire and the Raiders’ reported interest in giving the three-time Pro Bowler an extension, could Las Vegas’ new regime decide the AFC West is now too loaded and reconsider overpaying for Carr?
Think about it like this. With Wilson joining a division that already flaunted top-five talents in Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, where does this leave the Raiders, who swept their season series against the Broncos in 2021 and have question marks at right tackle, cornerback, defensive tackle and wide receiver?
Not in a favorable position, that’s for sure.
The bottom line is the Raiders need multiple offseasons to undo the mess left behind by the previous regime of Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock. Trading Carr, who will likely go for two first-round draft choices and a mid-round pick, would put Las Vegas in a position to expedite a potential rebuild.
If we’re thinking it, you better believe the Raiders are, too. As good as Carr is, nobody can argue against the fact Las Vegas is far and away the fourth-best team in the division now that Wilson is quarterbacking the Broncos.
If Carr becomes available, Washington will be interested.
