4 potential wide receiver trade targets for Commanders
By Jerry Trotta
2. Calvin Ridley
Calvin Ridley shouldn’t be a surprise inclusion for readers. In early January, news broke that Ridley could become available via trade this offseason as he and the Falcons could be looking for a “fresh start” after a chaotic 2021.
With the Falcons torn between rebuilding and trying to win more with Matt Ryan, and Ridley leaving the team on two separate occasions to focus on his mental health, it’s not crazy to think he’ll have a new home this offseason.
The Commanders should obviously look into Ridley’s status and determine his commitment to football before negotiating a trade. Assuming all of that checks out, they’d be nuts not to inquire about his price tag.
Last season, Ridley led the league with 16 catches of 20 or more yards. Since he was drafted in 2018, he’s tied for eighth in touchdowns (28), seventh in yards per catch (13.5) and 13th in receptions (248) among wideouts.
Pretty impressive for a guy who played just five games in 2022 and played his first three seasons with all-world talent Julio Jones.
Even better? While Ridley is 27 and just entering his prime, his trade value has likely dropped significantly after this past season. With one-year left on his rookie deal, he has a movable contract and is eligible for an extension.
If Curtis Samuel fails to impress in 2022, Washington could pull the plug on him (cutting him would save $5.8 million in cap space) and subsequently appoint Ridley as their WR2 of the future alongside Terry McLaurin.
Who says no?
