Latest buzz suggests Russell Wilson could be attainable for Commanders
By Jerry Trotta
Last offseason, the NFL saw unprecedented movement at the quarterback position.
Between the Los Angeles Rams trading for Matthew Stafford, and sending Jared Goff back to Detroit as part of the blockbuster, and the Indianapolis Colts poaching Carson Wentz from Philadelphia, it was a groundbreaking offseason.
To a lesser extent, the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mitchell Trubisky, Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, Tyrod Taylor and Andy Dalton all changed teams.
By signing Ryan Fitzpatrick, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, the Washington Commanders played a role in the sweepstakes. If you haven’t heard, they’re back in the market for a QB after Fitzpatrick suffered a dislocated hip in Week 1 and Taylor Heinicke underwhelmed as a backup.
While Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr feel like pipe dreams at this point, Seahawks superstar Russell Wilson actually feels attainable.
The nine-time Pro Bowler has already stated his intentions to “explore his options” and the Commanders buzz grew even louder this week after Kevin Sheehan, host of The Team 980 in Washington D.C., expressed confidence that Wilson “is not against being traded to Washington.”
The Commanders trading for Seahawks star Russell Wilson doesn’t seem like a pipe dream after all.
"“I did talk to a few people in Vegas. And the only thing that I will tell you is something that I feel confident in, based on the sources, and that is that Russell Wilson is not against being traded to Washington,” Sheehan reported.“So the first part would be: Is Seattle going to actually listen to offers for Russell Wilson? I have no idea on that answer. And then the second part of that is: Would Washington be the one willing to step up and pay big time? Now, I think the answer to that is yes. I think the answer to Washington stepping up and paying the price, and maybe paying above retail for Russell Wilson, I think it’s something they would do.”"
You don’t say? Of course, we wouldn’t jump to conclusions until one of the preeminent insiders in the industry jump in, but Sheehan, who’s been prone to drop the occasional scoop, certainly comes off convincing in his argument.
The good news — assuming this report is accurate — is that the Commanders are seemingly willing to paying a premium for Wilson and aren’t dissuaded by what many are calling the worst season of his pro career.
That just speaks to how high of a bar Wilson has set for himself. Only a select few quarterbacks in the game today can complete 64.8% of their passes and throw for 25 touchdowns to six interceptions and have it be deemed a down year.
Let’s also keep in mind Wilson returned early from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in the middle finger of his throwing hand. The injury clearly impacted his accuracy, so don’t read too much into his advanced stats and Seattle’s 6-8 record when he was in the lineup. He’s still a top-five player at the position.
Wilson still has two years left on his current contract and it’s unclear at this juncture whether Seattle would be open to trading him. In the event they are, Sheehan’s scoop suggests the Commanders wouldn’t shy away from making an offer.
That alone is something worth getting excited over.
