3 QBs who likely won’t be available for trade this offseason
By Jerry Trotta
The Washington Football Team picked a good time to be in the market for a quarterback. While there’s no appealing names hitting free agency, the 2022 crop is promising and there figures to be no shortage of veterans on the move.
Last offseason, we saw an unprecedented quantity of QB movement.
Between Carson Wentz landing in Indianapolis after he basically demanded a trade out of Philadelphia, Matthew Stafford leaving Detroit to join forces with the star-studded Rams, and Jared Goff being shipped to the Lions as part of that blockbuster, it was an offseason for the record books.
If you thought that was fun, you’re in for a real treat this time around. Come training camp, there could be up to 10 quarterbacks playing for different teams, including superstars Aaron Rodgers Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson.
Washington figures to be in the mix for all of those studs, including others, and it would help if they could narrow down who won’t be available. Since we’re in a giving mood, here are three QBs who seemingly fill that bill.
3 QBs who likely won’t be available for trade
3. Matt Ryan
Heading into the season, Ryan was a name many analysts believed could be playing elsewhere come 2022. As the year wore on, though, it became increasingly likely that the former No. 3 overall pick will stay in Atlanta.
For the season, Ryan played all 17 games, completing 67% of his passes for 3,968 yards and 20 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. A down year for his standards, but it’s worth noting the Falcons traded Julio Jones in the offseason, Calvin Ridley played just five games and he was playing behind a poor offensive line.
We fully believe Ryan could’ve been a great fit for Washington, but rumors of Ryan’s departure came to a screeching halt this week when a report leaked that head coach Arthur Smith, who just wrapped his first season in Atlanta, told both owner Arthur Blank and GM Terry Fontenot that Ryan is his QB.
We believe the Falcons should hit the rest button, but after a 7-9 finish it seems Smith thinks the team can compete for a playoff berth in 2022.
In other words, fans can rule out Matty Ice coming to Washington.
