Week 15 Reality Checks: Washington vs COVID-19
By Tim Payne
3. The Reality Is, Daron Payne has a chance to earn himself a LOT of money on Sunday.
Daron Payne is widely believed to be the odd man out when it comes to the defensive line members getting paid here in Washington.
Without something changing dramatically, it seems unlikely the team could afford to pay him top-level money after already paying Jonathan Allen and expecting to pay Chase Young and Montez Sweat in coming years.
This makes it likely that Payne is playing for either a big free agency contract or a franchise tag/trade/extension type of deal this offseason. In either case, a dominant performance by Payne this weekend with the rest of the defense in shambles could be just the kind of spotlight performance every agent dreams of their client putting together before negotiations begin. If Payne can single-handedly wreak havoc with a bunch of practice-squad players around him, he might open some eyes around the league and earn himself a massive bump in pay next season.
