After a 2-6 start, the Washington Football Team has finally started showing signs of the squad that hosted a playoff game last season.

Just one month ago, there were fans who had given up hope on the season and wanted the team to tank for a high draft pick. Now, however, the playoffs are within reach and folks are once again bullish on the future in Landover.

Luckily for Washington, most of their foundational pieces are locked up for the next couple of years, including Chase Young, Jonathan Allen, Terry McLaurin, Kendall Fuller, Antonio Gibson and Logan Thomas, among others.

Having said that, the team has a couple of important pieces that, as of this writing, are set to hit free agency in a few months’ time.

We all know how important roster continuity is in the NFL, especially when it comes to retaining impact players, so let’s put on our GM hat and highlight some impending free agents that must be re-signed in the offseason.

3. Joey Slye

Blocked extra-point aside, Joey Slye has been a revelation for Washington. And you can’t even put all of the blame for that gaffe on his shoulders. Looking back at the replay, the kick had plenty of elevation to make it up and over the line of scrimmage. Sometimes you gotta credit the other team for making a play.

Prior to that, though, Slye had been perfect across 11 kicks for Washington (six field goals and five point-afters). From everything we understand, he’s a seamless fit in the locker room and has the trust of his teammates.

Nothing proved that more when he made the victory over Carolina taste even sweeter by trolling Cam Newton and the Panthers, his former team, with a savage postgame Instagram. That only bolstered his standing amongst fans.

It’s a little bothersome Washington will only get five games (as opposed to eight) to determine if Slye is the answer at kicker, but we feel as though he showed enough in his first two-plus contests to warrant a new contract.

While Slye has never been an “elite” kicker in the NFL, he’s well above average and there won’t be a better option available in free agency.

Bring him back! Don’t let lost in Brian Johnson’s heroics!
