The Good: Washington’s defense continues to shine

33%: Seattle came in with the worst third-down conversion percentage in the NFL, and Washington’s defense continued that trend, only allowing 33% (4/12) on third downs to the Seahawks.

34: Washington completely shut down Seattle’s rushing attack, holding the team to 34 total rushing yards, for an anemic 2.8 yards per carry. This is the lowest rushing yards allowed by Washington’s defense since September 24, 2017 in a 27-10 win against the Raiders.

279: Washington was giving up 389.4 yards per game before the bye week, which was sixth-most in the NFL. Since the bye week, Washington’s defense has given up just 279 yards per game, fourth-best in the NFL.

10: Washington held Seattle to 10 total first downs, with Seattle only having 4 first downs through three quarters, a little over one first down per quarter. That’s excellent defense and to put that in perspective, the lowly Texans, who are dead last in first downs per game, still average 14.5 per game.

41:40: Washington once again dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 41 minutes and 40 seconds. The defense at one point forced Seattle into five straight three-and-out drives limiting its time of possession.

29: Antonio Gibson set a career-high with 29 carries, finishing with 111 rushing yards, while adding in 7 receptions for 35 yards. His 146 all-purpose yards were the most in his career as well.

22: Washington’s defense held Seattle without a first down for 22 minutes. 22 MINUTES!

1-13: The drought is over. Washington had 12 failed two-point conversions, which was the longest drought in NFL history since the two-point conversion was introduced. Antonio Gibson ran it in for two to put Washington up 17-9.

Other Highlights:

  • Kendall Fuller’s interception on the two-point conversion essentially ended the game for Washington. Fuller and the defense held DK Metcalf to only one reception. He did not see a target until 4:30 left in the third quarter.

  • J.D. McKissic continues to show he is one of the best free-agent signings in recent years.
  • Landon Collins continues to dominate in the “buffalo nickel” role.
  • Kam Curl had a near-pick to end a drive and then a sack to end the following drive.
  • The return of Curtis Samuel and Logan Thomas.
  • Heinicke continues to be efficient, going 23-of-25 passes under 10+ air yards and continuing to work his magic, turning this potential eight-yard loss into a positive gain.
