4. Which is exactly what they’ve done on the defensive line

Though they have been somewhat disappointing through the first half of the year, the Washington Football Team defensive line is still the heart and soul of the team. We have seen quality play from both James Smith Williams and Casey Toohill as they filled in for first-rounders Chase Young and Montez Sweat.

And the interior, led by Jonathan Allen, has been very good all year. We saw more of that interior strength on display against Carolina. We always knew that Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle were starting-caliber backups. But we have now seen a new face.

Here’s what I wrote about Daniel Wise this past Summer: “Wise … was a tackle-for-loss machine at Kansas. He showed great quickness and an excellent motor. The question that remains is whether he is big and powerful enough to stand up to NFL interior linemen.”

This past Sunday, Wise did not seem overmatched. There will almost certainly be some turnover with the interior linemen this off-season. Wise could find himself stepping up into a key backup role.
