Washington Football Team: Ranking WFT’s position groups after roster deadline madness
By Jonathan Eig
9. Quarterback
I’m not sure the quarterback situation is worse than the linebacker situation. But I know this much: the quarterback position in the modern NFL is far and away the most important position on the field, and that makes this Washington’s weakest link…at least until we see with our own eyes that Ryan Fitzpatrick can generate some Fitzmagic. He didn’t play much in the preseason, but he is a veteran who should get up to speed pretty fast. We all have to hope for that.
If Taylor Heinicke or Kyle Allen have to play due to Fitzpatrick’s ineffectiveness (as opposed to an injury), that will be a potentially devastating marker for the 2021 season. Either backup may play well for a while, but I don’t see either being highly productive week in and week out. And for all those who claim this defense is so good that simply having a QB who does not make mistakes will be good enough, I beg to differ. It may be good enough to play a bunch of close, low-scoring games and finish 7-10, but in the 2021 NFL, you have better have a quarterback who generates points. The days of Trent Dilfer winning a Super Bowl are in the distant past.
That’s how I have them handicapped. But as I said, everything will start changing once the season starts. That’s part of the fun of watching.
