In the immediate aftermath finalizing its 53-man roster, the Washington Football Team signed 14 players to its practice squad. All 14 were players who had played for the team extensively this preseason. The most notable omission was Steven Montez, who had been the team’s long-term developmental quarterback for the past year.

Montez signed on with Detroit, leaving Washington in the rare position of not having a fourth quarterback in development. With three QBs on the active roster – each of whom has started in the NFL – signing a developmental QB may not be immediately imperative. But rest assured – the Football Team will be bringing in another quarterback fairly soon.

At this point, the pickings are slim. Many of the more obvious options re-upped with their most recent team, which makes a lot of sense. Since that did not happen with Montez in Washington, the club will have to look elsewhere. Here are three options.

Washington Football Team:  3 QBs to consider for practice squad

3. Clayton Thorson

Eagles fans will laugh at this choice. They like to point out how Philly drafted Thorson ahead of Garnder Minshew in the 2019 draft, especially now that they have traded for Minshew

It’s true that Thorson is a limited quarterback, but he is also smart with good size, and a good enough arm to serve as an NFL backup. He was a four-year starter at Northwestern, and though he never showed eye-popping skills, he did everything well enough to succeed. A knee injury late in his junior season slowed his progression, but he still managed to be an effective quarterback against Big Ten competition.

Philadelphia selected him in the fifth round of the 2019 draft, and he has kicked around the NFC East ever since. Signing with the Washington Football Team would make it a clean sweep, as Thorson has already put in time with the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants.

He was recently released with an injury settlement by New York after suffering a concussion. When he is fully recovered, Thorson will become a free agent.
