Washington Football Team: Final 53-man roster prediction
By Jonathan Eig
Tight End
Current roster: Logan Thomas, John Bates, Ricky Seals-Jones, Sammis Reyes, Caleb Wilson
Thomas is obvious. Bates has showed enough to earn a spot. After that, it’s a real horse race. Temarrick Hemingway, who just a few weeks ago occupied the number two spot on the depth chart, was just released.
Reyes is totally untested with massive upside. Based on usage, the team should probably only keep three tight ends, but I am sorely tempted to keep four. To me, Reyes just offers too much upside to ignore, so he gets my third spot, but since that leaves two wholly untested players behind Thomas, I would like to find a way to keep Seals-Jones as well. Let’s see how that works out. Caleb Wilson is the Tony Brown of tight ends.
Final roster (3 or 4): Thomas, Bates, Reyes, and … maybe Seals-Jones.
Offensive Line
Current roster: Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Wes Schweitzer, Charles Leno, Jr, Samuel Cosmi, Ereck Flowers, Cornelius Lucas, Saahdiq Charles, Tyler Larsen, Keith Ismael, Beau Benzschawel, Wes Martin, David Sharpe, Dave Steinmetz, Jon Toth
Roullier, Scherff, Leno, Cosmi, and either Schweitzer or Flowers are the starters, with the other serving as the primary backup guard. Lucas is an excellent swing tackle. Charles can play guard or tackle and offers great flexibility.
The only specific position battle comes down to backup center, where it looks to me like Larsen is simply a better player than Ismael. And the recent re-signing of center Jon Toth adds a bit more doubt to the situation.
Martin, Sharpe, and Steinmetz have each hung around for a couple of seasons, but barring injury, I think their time has come and gone. Benzschawel hasn’t shown much yet, but he remains an intriguing prospect – a big man who can move, which is something the current regime seems to like.
Final roster (9): Roullier, Scherff, Leno, Cosmi, Schweitzer, Flowers, Lucas, Charles and Larsen.
