Special Teams, Practice Squad

Special Teams

  • Punter: Tress Way
  • Kicker:  Dustin Hopkins
  • Long Snapper:  Cameron Cheeseman
  • Returner:  DeAndre Carter

Tress Way is firmly entrenched as the punter, but Dustin Hopkins struggled in the first preseason game. He came back to post a solid outing the following week and the Washington Football Team is fully committed to him for now. DeAndre Carter is our projected returner.

The new special teams kid in town is long snapper Cameron Cheeseman from Michigan. He replaces a team legend, Nick Sundberg, and could end up staying in Ashburn for a decade or more.

A Practice Squad With Talent and Depth

The same rules that dictated the size and scope of the practice squad from 2020 will apply once again in 2021. Sixteen players will be signed to the squad and four can be protected each week from being signed by other franchises. Two players can be promoted to the main roster each week prior to a game and revert back to the squad at the conclusion of every contest.

Practice Squad

  • Keith Ismael, C/OG
  • Danny Johnson, CB/KR
  • Torry McTyer, CB (Protected)
  • Casey Toohill, DE (Protected)
  • Devaroe Lawrence, DT
  • Wes Martin, OG
  • Beau Benzschawel, OG
  • Jared Norris, LB
  • Jordan Kunaszyk, LB
  • Bobby McCain, FS
  • Steven Montez, QB
  • Jonathan Williams, RB
  • David Sharpe, OT
  • Sammis Reyes, TE (Protected)
  • Dax Milne, WR (Protected)
  • Isaiah Wright, WR

The name that jumps out for everyone is Sammis Reyes. He could be on the opening day roster, but we’re placing him on the practice squad as a protected player at this time.  Also, he missed a few days due to a concussion.

Any of the aforementioned players could make an appearance on the roster this season, especially if injuries occur.

What do you think of this roster prediction?  What changes would you make?  Are there any players from other teams who could make their way to the Washington Football Team?  We’ll find out in the coming days if this roster prediction was accurate or seriously flawed.  The 2021 season is almost here!
