3. Taylor Heinicke/Kyle Allen

We’re going to stretch the rules a bit and call this a tie. Player number three is Kyle Allen/Taylor Heinicke. Yes, that is two players, but one of them could be in his final season with the Washington Football Team and it is difficult to make a choice here.

The sentimental favorite to remain with Washington is Heinicke. He did play well in the final quarter of the last regular season game and had a spirited outing in the playoff loss to Tampa Bay.

The former Old Dominion star is an undersized quarterback who has the heart and desire to make you think he is much taller. His determination to make the most of this opportunity could pay dividends for him and the team.

Heinicke Works Hard, Kyle Allen Looms

The deck still seems like it could be stacked against Heinicke due to his stature, lack of experience, and injury history.

Kyle Allen seems to have a rash of bad luck more than anything, but he is probably second on the depth chart – when healthy.

Who has the advantage of being the backup to likely starter, Ryan Fitzpatrick?  Allen is taller, bigger, and has a better understanding of offensive coordinator Scott Turner’s system.

The Washington Football Team traded for Allen in 2020 and this probably gives him something of a preferable edge in the competition. Both players will be with the team this season, but the battle here is for more than just a backup slot in 2021. This is almost certainly the competition for making a case to be Washington’s long-term backup quarterback.
