4. Cornelius Lucas

Cornelius Lucas came to the Washington Football Team last season as an unheralded free agent offensive tackle.  In three of his four previous stops, the versatile swing tackle has been a dependable contributor.  Last year, his experience proved to be a valuable asset to Washington as a replacement left tackle.

Luas brings superior depth to the offensive line and will continue in that role this season.  Yes, he had a good 2020, but the 30-year-old is no more than a swing tackle.  He was angry when the media (indirectly) pointed that out when left tackle Charles Leno was on the verge of signing with Washington.  We won’t include his response to this post, but Lucas will need to adjust.

Washington veteran Cornelius Lucas has value as a swing tackle

Make no mistake. Lucas is a good swing tackle and can start a few games when called upon. He is not a long-term starter and good swing tackles are always available every offseason.

When Washington drafted Texas offensive tackle Sam Cosmi in the second round and added Leno a few weeks later, it basically sent a message that Washington views Lucas as strictly a quality backup. No one questions his talent, but he is not a seventeen-game starter.

Also, when Lucas went to the Covid protocol recently, it gave Cosmi more opportunities in camp and the massively-sized Longhorn is poised to fully take advantage of it.

Lucas will be a free agent next spring and he does turn 31 next summer – two factors that are not working in his favor.  This could be his last year in a Washington Football Team uniform.
