The Washington Football Team will play its first preseason game on Thursday, and Ron Rivera fielded questions from reporters over the weekend in preparation of the opener.

Among the big takeaways were Rivera revealing that Washington’s first-team offense, even quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, will get snaps against the New England Patriots.

While it might seem risky to deploy Fitzpatrick in a meaningless game, it’s smart to get his confidence flowing as the projected starter.

Rivera also disclosed that Curtis Samuel, who’s still limited by his nagging groin injury, might be able to suit up for the third and final preseason game. That wasn’t the update we were hoping for, but at least we have a timetable for the speedy wideout’s return, right?

Those are some noteworthy takeaways from an early-August presser. However, Washington’s head coach had an epic, albeit playful, drop-the-mic moment when he took a blatant shot at Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett with his closing remark.

Football Team head coach Ron Rivera hilariously trolled Jason Garrett

Garrett found himself in the crosshairs of NFL media and football fans alike last week when he basically told a reporter to address him as “coach.” Though it was later reported Garrett was only expressing a desire for some professional courtesy, that came after he was eviscerated, and rightly so given how privileged he came across for expecting reporters to call him “coach.”

Rivera is simply a legend for poking fun at this situation. We seriously need footage of this moment, because it sounds like an all-timer from the beloved head coach.

Though it didn’t set the bar very high, it has to be better than the awkward exchange between Garrett and the Giants media. Try not to get second-hand embarrassment watching this clip.

You can see why NFL Twitter erupted after this video was released. Of course, it looks different now that we know Garrett was simply looking for a “Good to see you, too,” but still.

Needless to say Rivera doesn’t have a bad bone in his body, and he would never intentionally embarrass Garrett on such a significant platform.

However, fans in Washington will love seeing the 59-year-old HC, who’s been all business since the start of training camp, relax a little bit and unleash a joke.

It’s unclear if Garrett took this personally or brushed it off as a joke, but we’ll know for sure after Week 2 when the two head coaches meet at midfield after the team’s lock horns.
