The Washington Minutemen

The Washington Minutemen would be a solid name for any professional sports franchise, regardless of the sport.

The term “minutemen” was coined around 1774. They were civilians who went on to form their own militias during the American Revolutionary War and were self-taught and self-trained soldiers who learned weaponry and strategy during the war. The name comes from their willingness to be ready at any minute.

Washington D.C. is an area that is full of history, and what a better way to represent that than to name the football team after an influential group in history? The “Minutemen” moniker fits the patriotic theme that is often thought of when thinking of our nation’s capital, while also providing an easy solution for finding a new mascot and rebranding.

The University of Massachusetts has the Minutemen as the mascot for their male sports. UMass isn’t an extremely prominent school nationwide, so the Football Team changing it’s name could bring further attention to UMass’s athletic department, especially through internet traffic. The Washington Football Team may have to get around some trademark implications but that isn’t hard to do, especially as a professional sports franchise.

Minutemen could be a very good name for a professional franchise of any sport if given the opportunity. While I think there are other names that could fit the Washington Football Team better, the Minutemen are definitely on my personal list for potential names.
