Washington Football Team: Extension affirms confidence in Logan Thomas
After extending the former QB-turned-TE, the Washington Football Team affirmed its confidence in its starting tight end, Logan Thomas.
A day after making a key move to extend star defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, the Washington Football Team also extends its starting tight end. Logan Thomas signed a three-year, $24M extension, with $10.3M in guarantees, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. This makes Thomas the seventh-highest paid tight end in the NFL. Again, it is a deal that is beneficial for both the team and the player.
In 2020, Thomas had a career year. He posted 72 catches, 670 yards, and 6 TDs and was tied for second on the team in targets, with 110. In his previous four years in the league, he totaled 35 receptions, 317 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
After finally getting a chance as a starting tight end, the former quarterback seemed to be turning a corner at his new position. And the Washington coaching staff and the front office seem to have confidence that he is doing just that.
Two of the biggest free agents on the 2021 market, Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, were tight ends. Washington had been rumored to have interest in both, but they elected to not get in those bidding wars. Free agency came and went. No tight ends were added that should challenge Thomas.
The draft came and went, and Washington selected John Bates in the fourth round. However, due to his limited physical upside, he looks to be in a competition for TE2. The offseason came and went. No true competition was added to the tight end room.
Washington signed basketball power forward-turned-tight end, Sammis Reyes to a contract. However, he will take some time to develop. And his success story may cap at a training camp invite, as he is a serious dart throw.
Washington added other veterans like Ricky Seals-Jones and Deon Yelder. But both are most likely just depth signings.
It did not take an expert to notice that Washington was perfectly content with Thomas as the starting tight end. The three-year extension, signed shortly before training camp, puts an emphatic exclamation point on that.
With the new weapons that have been added to the offense, Thomas’ 2021 numbers may not be as impressive as 2020. However, he still proved he has the traits to be a capable starting tight end. Getting Thomas extended entering a contract year was important.
As training camp opens, Ron Rivera has made it a priority to limit the distractions for the Washington Football Team. That includes any contract holdups. In a vote of confidence, Ron Rivera and the front office extended Logan Thomas.
