Wait… They didn’t take Brevin Jordan? Nope. Well, some of the top experts think this was a no-brainer. ESPN’s Todd McShay says that Bates had the second best hands for a tight end in the draft. Fellow ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. also said about Bates that the “Best is yet to come.” He’s not fast and does not have smooth route running, but Bates is a ready and willing blocker with great size and hands. With little-to-no competition behind Logan Thomas, John Bates should find himself sitting at TE2 for Washington this year. He will mostly serve as a blocker and short-yardage guy in two tight end sets.
