Washington Football Team: Analyzing the team’s linebackers in 2021
Inside Linebackers
The changes at inside linebacker during this offseason have been low-key, but fairly significant. The Washington Football Team has three true inside linebackers (we will put an asterisk by their names for now), but others could see some action on the inside as well.
- Jon Bostic *
- David Mayo *
- Cole Holcomb
- Jamin Davis
- Jared Norris *
- Free Agent (?)
Jon Bostic will head to training camp as the likely starter in the middle, but he could slide to the outside in various alignments. Bostic is one of the most under-appreciated players for Washington. Take a look at his production in 2020. 118 tackles. Three sacks. Six tackles for lost yardage. Six quarterback hits. Look for another productive season from Bostic.
David Mayo will serve as the primary backup, but he is likely to see a decent amount of playing time this season. He is very familiar with the defense after spending four years with Carolina (2015-2019) and two more with the Giants.
Jared Norris faces long odds to be with the team this fall. He has spent some time with Carolina, but has played sparingly since entering the league in 2016.
Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis could see some snaps at inside linebacker in certain defensive sets throughout the season.
Last-minute edit: Joe Walker was signed late Wednesday afternoon. He is an inside linebacker, but his chances of being on the roster in September are very low.
2021 Prediction
- Jon Bostic – 92 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, two interceptions.
- David Mayo – 26 tackles, two pass deflections, two quarterback hits.
