Round 5

The Choice:  Keith Ismael, OL, San Diego State

Our Choice:  Daniel Thomas, S, Auburn (Jaguars)

When center Tyler Larsen was signed by the Washington Football Team several weeks ago, it likely signaled that Keith Ismael was put on the roster bubble.  Ismael was drafted to be a backup center to starter Chase Roullier, but there is no indication that the former Aztec Warrior is ready to take the field if his number is called.

Daniel Thomas is a versatile safety who can play deep or in the box.  He produced a decent rookie season and should improve in the years ahead.  The Jaguars were able to get great value in the fifth round.  At the very least, Thomas could’ve been a valuable depth option for Washington.

Ismael could be a candidate for the practice squad if the coaches feel he can be a contributor in the future, but Thomas would’ve provided better value in this round.

The Choice:  Khaleke Hudson, LB, Michigan

Our Choice:  Darnell Mooney, WR, Tulane (Bears)

Khaleke Hudson is a special teams ace and his efforts as a gunner were prominently on display in 2020.  He led the team in special teams tackles, but offered very little as a linebacker.  His value is decent and selecting him in the fifth round can’t be faulted.  It’s likely that Hudson will never have any kind of impact as a linebacker, but good teams need talented gunners.

Darnell Mooney would’ve been a much better choice and it is not close.  Mooney had a rookie season that defies logic as a fifth rounder.  61 catches and four touchdowns are the numbers, and that’s production that the Washington Football Team could’ve used from another wide receiver in 2020.  For a fifth-rounder, Mooney was an absolute steal for the Bears.

Hudson should enjoy another fine season as a gunner, but to imagine the kind of season that Mooney produced makes this an easy choice.  With 20-20 hindsight, you select Darnell Mooney ten times out of ten.
