Washington Football Team 2020 NFL Draft re-draft: Which picks change?
Round 3
The Choice: Antonio Gibson, RB, Memphis
Our Choice: No change
There was a time when running backs were a major target in the first round of each draft. The NFL has become a passing league in recent decades and this major shift has relegated the best running backs to the middle rounds or later. Antonio Gibson is one such running back who would’ve been an obvious first-round pick back in the day, but the Washington Football Team wasted no time in selecting him early in the third round.
When Washington’s offense sputtered out of the gates early in the 2020 season, it limited the production of each offensive player at the skill positions. Gibson came to life when the offense began to improve and he was able to produce a solid season. He was the team leader in touchdowns with 11 total. If Gibson didn’t have a nagging injury late in the season, his production would’ve been significantly better.
Here is an interesting thought to ponder. He was not considered to be a good football prospect out of high school. It wasn’t until his senior season when Gibson started to flash his potential. At East Mississippi Junior College, he didn’t have an impact until his second season. It was the same story at Memphis. As a junior, Gibson barely had an impact. His second and final season for the Tigers was special. Gibson is entering his second season as a member of the Washington Football Team. You do the math. Antonio Gibson was the best choice in Round 3.
