Potential Washington Football Team UDFAs: Defense

Defensive Line

  • Darius Stills, Defensive Tackle, West Virginia. Stills is a bit undersized, but the Washington Football Team really likes him.  He could spend a year on the practice squad and gain some weight/muscle.
  • Forrest Merrill, Defensive Tackle, Arkansas State. Big body that will need time to develop.
  • Michael Boykin, Edge/Defensive End, North Alabama. Boykin is raw, but the potential is there.  He probably needs to lose about 20-25 pounds.

Linebacker

  • Buddy Johnson, Inside Linebacker, Texas A&M.  If he can flash superb special teams skills, Johnson could make the final roster.
  • Paddy Fisher, Linebacker, Northwestern. Fisher was a third or fourth-round prospect last year.  The Washington Football Team should take a serious look at him.
  • Jordan Fox, Linebacker, Stanford.  Fox is a decent player and could fit in as a 4-3 Will linebacker.
  • Anthony Hines, Linebacker, Texas A&M.  Ideal size for a Will linebacker, but he may need a couple of years on the practice squad.

Secondary

  • Tre Norwood, Cornerback, Oklahoma. If Norwood isn’t chosen on day three, Washington should have him on speed dial.
  • Tay Gowan, Cornerback, Central Florida.  He will need a year on the practice squad, but offers some versatility as a special teams player and could see some assignments at safety.
  • Qwynnterrio Cole, Free Safety, Alcorn St.  He has true potential and could be a contributor in his second year.
  • Eric Burrell, Strong/Free Safety, Wisconsin.  Burrell is a smart, savvy player who could carve out a role with the team by year two.
  • Nick Pickett, Free Safety, Oregon.  Pickett will need a couple of years on the practice squad, but his skills can be developed.

Extra Notes:  Keep an eye on Stills, Fisher, Fox, Norwood, and Cole.

Overtime:  The Washington Football Team needs a long snapper and here are a few candidates to be added after the draft.

  • Camaron Cheeseman, Michigan
  • Adam Bay, Wisconsin
  • Ryan Langan, Georgia Southern
  • Thomas Fletcher, Alabama

Final Thoughts

This is the final draft article from yours truly on the 2021 NFL Draft and UDFA market.  The roster is starting to take shape for the 2021 season and football players on the field of play will happen quicker than we can imagine.  It has been quite a journey and I thank you for all of the comments here at Riggo’s Rag and on social media.

UDFAs are so valuable to a team, but the average fan finds it difficult to imagine why this is so.  They can give long periods of rest to starters in off-season practices and pre-season games.  Their value is significant to the success of every team in the NFL.  The only certainty for Washington in this UDFA class will be the addition of a long snapper — unless they draft one late.

The draft will resume soon and UDFAs will begin to field calls starting immediately after the draft.  Will Washington find that hidden diamond or golden nugget?  We’ll know by later this summer.
