Samuel Cosmi. 23. player. 30. . Offensive Tackle. New York Jets

We learned one big thing about the Jets and their strategy under general manager Joe Douglas last year with their early draft picks. They love to take chances on freakish athletes.

With Tristan Wirfs still on the board in Round 1 last year, the Jets took a chance on Mekhi Becton to be their left tackle of the future. That ended up panning out, as Becton was a great blocker before a shoulder injury limited him later on in the season.

In the second round, the team took Denzel Mims, a wide receiver who blazed a 4.38-second 40-yard dash despite having a 6-foot-3, 207-pound frame. Mims was a true athletic freak and has the making of a potential star on the outside. He didn’t play a lot as a rookie while dealing with injuries, but again, this was an upside pick.

With Zach Wilson all but locked in as the No. 2 overall pick, that’s another point for hyper-athletic prospects, as Wilson has a strong arm and great athletic ability. And at 23, they’ll probably choose another athletic prospect.

Samuel Cosmi would qualify. The 6-foot-5, 314-pound offensive tackle logged a 9.99 relative athletic score out of 10. That tied him for the second-highest RAS among all draftable players this year, so that goes to show the upside that Cosmi has.

On tape, Cosmi isn’t consistent, but when he plays well, he flashes brilliance. He could be a great fit across from Becton as a bookend on the right side, and the athletic, young duo would be a great one to protect Wilson in the pocket long-term.

And if Cosmi isn’t ready to start right away, the team still has George Fant available to play right tackle next year. So, Cosmi could be a swing tackle. Or maybe he could kick inside to guard for a year to provide better athleticism there.

Either way, Cosmi looks like a good fit for the Jets and he would fill a need. If they don’t want a tackle, grabbing a pass rusher like Jayson Oweh would make sense for the Jets.
