NFC East QB Confidence Rankings: Philadelphia Eagles

  • Starter: Jalen Hurts – 5.0
  • Back-up: Joe Flacco – 4.0
  • Deep Back-up: None – 0.0

Hurts gets my lowest starting rating of any QB in the division, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like him. I think he’s a solid prospect. At this point, though, that’s all he is. Seeing him pulled out of the Eagles’ final game against the Washington Football Team in favor of Nate Sudfeld was just out-and-out bizarro world.

There were things going on in Philly last season that defy explanation, and we will see if Hurts can thrive with a new coaching staff this year. I will just point out that changing staffs on a young QB usually does not bode well.

What he has going for him, in addition to his good blend of passing and running, is the return of Brandon Brooks and Andre Dillard from injury, and the return to full-health of Lane Johnson and Isaac Seumalo. A very good offensive line will go a long to ensuring Hurts’ success.

Flacco is basically Mike Glennon, only with a much better resume. At this point, he is not a serious threat, but he can come in keep things running should Hurts falter. He can still throw the ball deep, and he will have time behind a healthy line.

I’m giving him the same rating as Glennon, but I give him a very slim chance of surprising people this season should he have to play extended minutes. Emphasis on “slim.”

As of today, the Eagles do not have a third QB on their roster. I don’t even see one listed on their practice squad. That does earn the Patrick the Starfish rating.
