Washington Football Team Mock Draft: Trading out of the first round
Washington Football Team Round 3 picks
Round 3 Pick 78: QB Kellen Mond, Texas A&M
Yet again, Washington was offered a trade in the third round, this time, moving down four picks to pick 78 while picking up a fourth-round pick in exchange for a seventh-round selection.
With the 78th pick, Washington was potentially able to find its quarterback of the future in Kellen Mond. Mond was the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback recruit in the country in 2017 and showed off that skillset with the Aggies.
During his senior year, he completed 63 percent of his passes, finishing with 19 touchdowns to only three interceptions. He also added 294 yards on the ground to go along with four rushing touchdowns.
One of Mond’s biggest assets is his ability to throw on the run, although he did focus on passing from within the pocket his senior year. Being a four-year starter in a pro-style offense will definitely work in his favor as he transitions to the NFL. Analysts are all over the board with Mond with some seeing him as a third-round selection, while others having him in the Round 4-5 range.
The analyst that has spoken most glowingly of Mond is Chris Simms, who actually has Mond ranked higher than Justin Fields in his quarterback rankings.
"His throwing is special…I think, as pure throwers right now, when you just talk to me about, ‘Man, they can stripe it and throw perfect strikes every time,’ (Zach) Wilson, Mac Jones and Kellen Mond to me are more machines than Trevor Lawrence is at this point. Mond has a really quick release."
Mond wouldn’t immediately be a solution but having Ryan Fitzpatrick there as a mentor could definitely work to Washington’s advantage with this selection.
Round 3 Pick 79, LB Nick Bolton, Missouri
Despite being on the smaller side at 6-feet and 232 pounds, Bolton was one of the top linebackers in the SEC. In 2019, he finished with 107 tackles, which led the SEC during the regular season. He also earned a 91.1 PFF grade, which made him the top-graded linebacker in the SEC.
In 2020, he finished with 95 total tackles, eight TFL, two sacks, and five passes defended. He is an above-average run stopper and plays very physically. Analysts see him as being a three-down player who can slate in as a MIKE LB.
