1. Rotational Edge Rusher

The Washington Football Team has one of the best duos of edge rushers in the NFL in Chase Young and Montez Sweat. However, with the departure of Ryan Anderson, and as Ryan Kerrigan remains a free agent, the depth behind them remains a concern.

The depth currently is a mid-season addition in 2020, Casey Toohill, and 2020 seventh-round pick James Smith-Williams. While both have decent upside due to their physical gifts and high work ethic, adding another one would be smart.  In the modern NFL, it is necessary to have three capable edge rushers. And adding more darts to the dartboard, while also increasing the competition, can only exude good results.

The easiest solution would be to re-sign Ryan Kerrigan. However, it seems Kerrigan wants to start next year and is holding out for an opportunity. If his market remains dry, it would be in the best interest of Washington to re-sign Kerrigan.

As far as the draft goes, like usual, the talent dips after the projected Day 2 players. One of my personal favorite players, that may still be there on Day 3, is Tulane’s Cam Sample. You can read my review of Sample as a player in my recent mock draft here. However, it looks as if he may end up going on Day 2 as well.

The Washington Football Team will be wise to target another edge rusher at some point in the 2021 NFL Draft. You cannot expect every player to stay healthy, and edge rushers that never miss time, who get battered every play, are an anomaly.

Some other deep sleepers in the draft to consider would be Coastal Carolina’s Tarron Jackson and Duke’s Chris Rumph.

That concludes the three underrated needs for the Washington Football Team. Do you agree with these needs? Are there others we missed? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
