Round 3, Pick No. 74: Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M

The Washington Football Team finally addresses the quarterback position with the selection of Kellen Mond from Texas A&M in Round 3. With 44 career starts as the signal caller of the Aggies, and with 71 touchdown passes versus 27 interceptions, Mond is the right pick here based on the board.

Mond has the potential to add to an offense when he’s ready that already has a decent amount of speed and athleticism with Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson and Curtis Samuel. This pick allows the Washington Football Team to keep building the offense with Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm for a year while not having to rush a rookie in who will need to sit for at least one season. Mond is not the quick fix fans will be looking for, but a player who has plenty of tools in his box to work with.

Throughout his career in College Station, Mond became a player that steadily developed and improved his game. He is far from a perfect prospect and that is okay. He will need work with items like understanding NFL offensive concepts and how to be more decisive with his throws. What Mond does seem to excel at is mobility in the pocket, throwing on the move, and keeping his eyes down field when extending plays. He has also been praised for his toughness and leadership ability.

While using the Pro Football Network Draft Simulator recently, there was a scenario in which North Dakota State QB Trey Lance fell to pick No. 19. It was a surprise to say the least and obviously not a scenario that seems realistic at this point. To get Lance or one of the other top-ranked quarterbacks in the draft, a trade to move up will most likely be needed.

If the WFT cannot complete a trade to move up in the draft, then a player like Mond is the best that can be expected. Also considered for this pick was Stanford QB Davis Mills, Florida QB Kyle Trask, and UGA QB Jamie Newman. These quarterbacks were either selected before this pick or not seen as an ideal fit for what the decision makers want at the position.

The theme for this mock draft will continue to be size, speed, athleticism, toughness, and effort. Kellen Mond is no exception to this theme. Many will like this pick, many may not. It is the polarizing nature of the QB position at the end of the day. With the 82nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Washington Football Team selects…
