Washington Football Team: Former TE Thaddeus Moss signed by Bengals
By Ian Cummings
The son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss didn’t go without a home for long, after being released by the Washington Football Team.
Hopes were high when the Washington Football Team signed former LSU tight end Thaddeus Moss as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft. At the time, the Washington Football Team lacked a true No. 1 tight end, and since the position hadn’t been settled yet, Moss was viewed as a potential sleeper.
Moss chose the Washington Football Team over the Patriots and Bengals, favoring the opportunity in the nation’s capital. But that opportunity wouldn’t favor him. Moss failed to stand out throughout the offseason, and was waived on August 21 with an injury designation. He later reverted to injured reserve, and spent the entire 2020 season on the injured reserve list for Washington.
Moss’ status on injured reserve carried him over into the 2021 offseason, but Washington apparently decided early on that Moss wouldn’t be in their ensuing plans. On April 9, just several days ago, Washington waived Moss again, this time sending him to the waiver wire.
Earlier today, it was revealed by NFL insider Ian Rapoport that Moss was claimed on waivers, by the Cincinnati Bengals, a team that had interest in Moss after the 2020 NFL Draft. The Bengals’ signing of Moss caps off an inconsequential saga for the Washington Football Team, which began with a surprising amount of fanfare when Moss was signed by Washington in 2020.
Being the son of Randy Moss, Thaddeus Moss’ surname carried weight. However, he wasn’t a particularly inspiring prospect in 2020. Despite his collegiate production — 47 catches, 570 yards, and four scores in 2019 — Moss was only an average athlete with below-average size. He received some hype as a mid-to-late-round pick, but instead went undrafted — a sign that the league was lower on him than the media and fans.
Still, there was hope that Moss would become a contributor for Washington, and even after Logan Thomas’ emergence in 2020, the door was still open for Moss to return in 2021. Now, however, Moss will get his next chance with another team. Washington, meanwhile, will move forward with their current group until the draft rolls around.
Outside of Logan Thomas, names like Dylan Cantrell and Tyrone Swoopes are intriguing. However, more likely than not, Washington will add a tight end in the 2021 NFL Draft. They could use a No. 2 tight end alongside Logan Thomas, and now, it’s confirmed that Moss won’t be a part of that equation.
