Reviewing the Washington Football Team’s offense before the 2021 NFL Draft

The Washington Football Team currently lists 50 players on its active roster. There are another 16 scattered across various reserved lists. After the upcoming draft, and subsequent undrafted free agent signings, those numbers will begin to change.

There’s a pretty good chance that about 20 of the players currently listed will not make it to opening day, 2021. So before the draft, let’s take a quick look at the players who – as of today – make up your Washington Football Team.

(I am not including the 16 practice-squaders. It’s not that I am uncomfortable expressing opinions about players I have never seen before. But I will not insult your intelligence by doing it here.)

Today, we look at the 36 players on offense. We’ll start things off with the quarterbacks.

ACTIVE ROSTER

Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB (38)

The biggest free agent signee.

Best Case Scenario for 2021: More games like this – 9/15/16, FitzMagic goes 24 of 34 for 374 yards, one TD, and no picks in a 37-31 win over Buffalo.

Worst Case Scenario for 2021: More games like this – one week later, 20 of 48 for 188, with SIX interceptions in a 24-3 loss. That’s the Fitz roller coaster.

Taylor Heinicke, QB (28)

After the Alex Smith return, Heinicke’s playoff game against Tom Brady was the Washington Football Team’s best story of the year.

Best: Fitz falters and Heinicke becomes the next Kurt Warner.

Worst: Fitz falters and Heinicke becomes the next Don Majkowski.

Steven Montez, QB (25)

UDFA with a big arm. Was bypassed in favor of Taylor Heinicke in 2020.

Best: Another year on the practice squad. Shows enough to be re-upped for the 2022 season when he has his best chance at the big leagues.

Worst: Washington drafts a QB and Montez becomes the fifth man at a table with only four chairs.

RESERVE LISTS

Kyle Allen, QB (25)

A dislocated ankle ended his brief run as the starter in 2020. He was showing some promise before he went down.

Best: Allen beats out Heinicke as the backup and when Fitzpatrick hits his annual skid, Allen comes in a proves the team can win with him. No other number matters. Just wins.

Worst: Washington drafts a mid-round quarterback and decides to move ahead with Heinicke and the rookie. Allen is released before opening day.
