Three Washington Football Team players that remain unsigned in free agency
1. EDGE Ryan Kerrigan
While Foster and Smith haven’t received much interest to date and could go unsigned longer-term, Ryan Kerrigan probably won’t. He has already had a meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals, and it looks like he’s just waiting to find the best situation for him.
Kerrigan spent the first 10 years of his career in Washington and was their most consistent pass rusher. He was long underrated as a do-it-all pass rusher. He could win in a variety of ways whether it was with strength, speed, hand moves, you name it.
Not only was he a great pass rusher, Kerrigan was a terrific run defender as well. And before 2019, he had never missed a game during his career and had never failed to log 7.5 sacks in a season.
Things have changed a bit for Kerrigan recently. In his last two seasons, he had just 5.5 sacks each year. Of course, there was a reason for that. He wasn’t playing as much as he had in previous years, and that was especially true while he was behind Chase Young and Montez Sweat last year.
If Kerrigan were in a starter role, he could probably still find success as a savvy veteran that can produce. He may not be the potential double-digit sack artist he once was, but teams could certainly do worse than him as a starter. And as a top backup? He would be one of the best in the league, as he was last year.
Kerrigan is probably waiting to see which teams really need starters on the edge before making a free-agent decision. But it’s safe to say that if he wants to keep playing, he should have a chance to do so. He had 95.5 sacks during his 10 years in Washington. That type of production doesn’t go unnoticed.
We’ll soon see if these former Washington Football Teamers get scooped up, but aside from these three, there aren’t a lot of big-name players still on the market. The WFT has either re-signed their players or they have landed somewhere else.
