An update on Sam Darnold

Earlier in the offseason, it was reported that Washington had some measured interest in Darnold. However, the price was steep. At the time, the Jets reportedly wanted a first-round pick, to recoup their initial investment for the passer.

Over time, that asking price has steadily decreased. First, Darnold’s value regressed to a second-round pick. And now, with teams like San Francisco, Detroit, and Indianapolis set on other solutions, demand has dwindled. And the Jets have been forced to lower their price even more.

On the latest episode of Pro Football Network’s Draft Insiders, featuring draft analysts Trey Wingo and Tony Pauline, Pauline gave some insight on Darnold’s situation, and again listed the Washington Football Team as a potential suitor. Here’s the full quote from Pauline:

“It’s probably going to be for a third-round pick,” Pauline said to Wingo during the live Draft Insiders show. “The Colts are out. The 49ers are now out. You’re looking at Washington. Maybe you’re looking at Chicago. The sleeper team is the Panthers.”

Pauline’s words strongly imply that the Washington Football Team, while safe at quarterback for now, has not closed the door on a potential deal for Darnold. As enigmatic as Darnold is, it’s a smart move for Washington to stay tuned in. As his value continues to drop, he could be had for a much lower price than anticipated.

But now, the question isn’t the price. The question is whether or not Darnold can provide returns.
