Round 3, Pick 2 – Stanford QB Davis Mills

The key addition at quarterback isn’t Ryan Fitzpatrick, but flexibility. With Fitzpatrick in tow, the Washington Football Team has the flexibility to stand pat at quarterback for a year, pick a mid-round player to develop under Fitzpatrick, or trade up for a top-four quarterback with the intention of sitting them behind a bridge starter.

All options are on the table, and Washington doesn’t have to force itself down one particular path. If they bypass quarterback in Round 1, then a decent option in the middle rounds would be Stanford quarterback Davis Mills.

Mills is a former top recruit out of high school, but he was never able to  break out at Stanford. This past season, Mills completed 129 of 195 passes for 1,508 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions, all in five games. He also rushed for three touchdowns.

Mills is relatively undeveloped, but there’s definite potential with the Stanford quarterback. He has very solid arm talent, and can generate easy velocity with a crisp, compact throwing motion. Mills also tested better than expected at his pro day, logging a 4.78 40-yard dash, a 32-inch vertical, and a sub-7-second three-cone time, all at 6-foot-4, 217 pounds.

Mills offers relatively high upside. He’s a pocket-passing quarterback with the mobility and the arm to fulfill certain requirements of the modern offense. Nevertheless, he needs to further refine his mental game. Learning behind Fitzpatrick for a year could be very good for him.
